Christian Atsu:"I had had clubs from Spain and also from France but I decided to come to Newcas
Christian Atsu has spoken to the BBC about how he turned down deals from other European clubs to drop down to the Championship with Newcastle United.
“I had had clubs from Spain and also from France but I decided to come to Newcastle. It’s my option and I’m very happy that I made this decision. Newcastle is a big club and for my development, with the coach, I think is the best option for me. I spoke with my family and friends and they also gave me the green light.
“Football is sometimes about entertaining people. You win but you also need to make your fans happy. The African style of playing is about entertaining people but you want to win as well. My intention is to help the club. In many ways really, not just scoring but also creating chances.
“I want to get along with the players and create some team spirit. With my style of play, I believe I can help the team and I am working hard to do that.”
Reminded of his stunning strike in the AFCONs last year that won goal of the tournement, Atsu was asked what he'd do if he scores a similar goal for Newcastle.
"If I score that type of goal in front of Newcastle fans, I'd go crazy. I love playing and I love playing in front of fans. It gives me a lot of confidence, that’s why I am happy to be here.
"I need to concentrate on each and every training session. Before I even think of staying at the club I have put myself forward and look at the opportunity. For me, I am starting again. I’m trying to repay something and create my future. This is a big opportunity for me to work hard and I am confident that it can be a good time.
“I knew they [Newcastle] had been playing in the Premier League and they are a big club in England. They have a history. I have tried to read more about them.
“I almost scored, but I was very happy with the win. When the team scores it’s good and all that is important is the team winning so I was very happy to win the game.“We can’t speak about promotion just yet because it’s too early. There have only been seven games so far and we have to keep our focus. We must try to win every game.”
