Mitch Beeney has been challenged to earn the number one spot
Chelsea goal keeper Mitchell Beeney has been challenged by former Chelsea under 21s boss to earn the number 1 spot at Crawley Town.
Beeney is on loan at Crawley Town until January, but faces competition for starts. He was an unused sub for Crawley Town's opening game of the season and cup game in midweek, leading to frustrations that this loan spell could be little use.
However, former Chelsea under 21s boss Dermot Drummy has challenged Beeney to displace Yussuf Mersin in goal.
“It was a choice between the two and it was a hard choice. I had to go with my gut feeling and on Friday I hadn’t made my mind up and I just went in and watched them in the restaurant eating," Drummy said.
“You sometimes get that feeling. I pulled Mitchell to one side and said I think this and he was ok. I said you now need to get that training method in to get to number one and he took it like a professional.
“The development for Mitchell is now right thinking, how do I get this back. For me that is right and the perfect loan situation. That’s the real world, you fight for your place and when you get your place as a goalkeeper, you have to keep it.”
