Papy Djilobodji suspended. Werder Bremen plan to appeal
On Tuesday, Werder Bremen were told that Papy Djilobodji has been handed a three-match ban for making a throat-slitting gesture against Mainz 05 on Saturday.
"We maintain that the ruling of a three-match ban is unjustifiable. Above all, we believe that, under the circumstances, the severity and the wrongdoing in this case was lesser than that of the Deniz Naki case," explained Bremen chief executive Thomas Eichin. Deniz Naki was suspened in 2009 for a similar gesture.
Papy will only start his suspension after his serves his one-game suspension for picking up his 5th yellow card of the season in the same match. That is now 5 yellow cards in 10 Bundesliga games for Papy.
If Bremen are unsuccessful in their appeal, Djilobodji will miss the semi-final of the DFP against Bayern Munich. Bremen sit 1 point ahead of the relegation zone with 7 League games to go. #
*UPDATE: Following appeal, the DFB has reduced Papy Djilobodji suspension to 2 matches, plus a fine.
